Puri, The Famous Travel Destination in India

Jagannath Temple, Puri

Puri, one of the great pilgrims, is a small but most popular town in Orissa. It’s a one kind of Palm Beach, located at east coast beaches in India. Puri is a holy city to all Hindus. According to Hindu Teachings, there are four pilgrims in India – Badrinath, Dwarka, Rameswaram & Puri. And the journey of a pilgrimage will never complete without visit to Puri; that’s why the name of the city is “PURI”. On the other end, “PURI” is the short name come from the holy place of Lord Jagannath Puri. It is also known as Jagannath Dham and Purushottam. It is also famous for Chariot Festival (Ratha Yatra), hold on june-July of every year.

Bhubaneswar, the present capital of Orissa, is also a famous tourist spot. While traveler visits to Puri, most of them take a short tour to Bhubaneswar. It was the ancient capital of the once might Kalinga Empire of great Asoka. There are also lots of small and big temples. Due to lots of various temples, this city is also known as “City of Temples”. Bhubaneswar, Puri and Konarak are the famous triangle of Orissa tourism. Here are some most popular tourist spots:

Konarak Sun Temple1. Konarak Sun Temple:

It is also known as Black Pagoda for its dark color, seen from a distance. In 13th century, contemporary famous King Narasimhadeva-I(AD 1236-1264) made this temple due to victory over the Muslims. Architecture of this temple is just like a chariot of Sun God. This chariot pulls down by seven horses, represent seven days in a week; twelve pairs of wheels, represent twelve months of a year. Every wheels has eight spokes, represent the time of the day and whereas symbolize the stages of a woman in a day.

2. The Lingaraj Temple:

This is the largest temple in Orissa. In the 11th century, this temple became a most holy place in the city. This temple is dedicated to Lord of Shiva. There are all incarnation of God Shiva.

Khandagiri & Udayagiri Caves3. The Khandagiri & Udayagiri Caves:

These are partly natural and partly artificial. These caves are situated on two adjacent hills, 8 km. from the capital town Bhubaneswar. There are 18 caves in Udayagiri, another name “Sunrise Hill” and Khandagiri has only 14 caves. All caves were used for Jain monasteries.

4. Dhauli/Dhauligiri:

This is a hill station, little few distance from Bhubaneswar, with clear view of the river Daya. After Kalinga Edicts, the water of Daya had turned red with the blood of the many dead soldiers in the battle. The great king Asoka realized the pathetic result of a war and he decided to leave the weapon forever and select the Dhauli for Buddhist Activities. “Sanchi Stupa” is one of the main tourist attractions at there.

Another tourist attraction is Orissa State Museum. It was established in 1948 at the center of the city. There are huge collection of arts, crafts, handcrafts, palm leaves, tools of ages, coins, painting and lots more.

6. Nandan Kanan Zoo:

It’s a zoo and a botanical garden in Orissa, highly popular between tourist and local people. It is established in 1960 and it was opened for public in 1979. This is the 1st Indian zoo which can joined in “World Association of Zoos and Aquariums” (WAZA) in 2009. There are various kinds of animals and some rare species at here.
